Six Closet Staples for Spring & Summer

IMG_2570

Hey y’all!

I can’t believe April is almost over and May is right on our heels!  This means one thing for Texas!  The heat IS coming!  We’ve been enjoying a few weeks of spring, but if you are familiar with Houston weather, it doesn’t last long and will be smoldering soon.

I am so excited for May though!  My middle son, Davis is finishing Pre-K this year and so ready for kindergarten.  We decided to put him in a transition class this past year because of his late birthday.  It was a hard decision, but I am so thankful he had that extra year to grow a little.  Socially I think it helped him the most.  My oldest is finishing 2nd grade and is so ready for his first sleep away camp that’s coming up in June.

Today I am really excited to share this blog post with you!  As a style blogger, my goal is to create affordable outfits that you can either create with what you have in your closet, or if you are someone building a wardrobe or simply updating pieces, I hope to bring you new fun pieces to add into your rotation.

As a mom, I am usually in a mom uniform most days, but I love to get dressed up and make my everyday casual looks a little more put together if you know what I mean.  Don’t get me wrong, I love athleisure wear but there is something about getting dressed in the morning, that makes me ready to face the day!

This blog post is filled with six basic items that can be used in your spring and summer wardrobes!  These items are all versatile and will be easy to style multiple ways through out these warmer months.

CAMIS

I love adding good basics into my wardrobe.  A cami is a staple item that can be used in so many different ways, from styling it with denim shorts for a casual look to dressing up for the office with slacks and a blazer.  This cami was #1 on my list when I spotted it online at Nordstrom.  I was a little hesitant thinking it was going to be really short, but I tried it on with mid-rise shorts and these white denim jeans and had room for a front tuck!

This cami has adjustable straps which makes it nice since everyone’s arms, shoulders and bust sizes are all different.  I was able to get just the right fit that I liked with the adjustable straps.  This cami is very light weight and flowy so will be good for hot temps.

A cami is also great for layering.  You could easily style this cami underneath a blazer for a work look or a night out.  I also plan to dress this cami down and throw it on with denim shorts this summer.

For reference, I am wearing the small and love the fit.  It also comes in a pretty light pink and white, both perfect for spring and summer styling!

WHITE DENIM

Next up, is something most have but sometimes needs to be updated.  I just tossed my white pair of denim jeans that lasted 2 years.  When you buy a new pair and compare the colors you can see how “non” white your old pair are. ;P.  White denim is a spring staple, and can be worn for so many occasions.  I love dressing my white denim up for a date night, but also looks great for running around in with flip flops!

These slightly distressed white jeans have been my go to this year.  I like that they have a little distressing so I can still dress them up if needed.  Don’t worry, if distressing isn’t your thing, these jeans come without distressing too.  Click here for the non distressed pair.  This pair isn’t see through and has a great stretchy fit.  I love the jeans because they are high waisted and they also offer petite, tall and curvy fit.  For reference, I always size down one size in LOFT jeans.

SUMMER CLUTCH

Next up, who loves a fun summer clutch!  I usually have plenty of bags for little black dresses, but during the warmer months I love a good clutch that can be used for a casual day when I just need a smaller purse or for fun evenings out.  When I spotted these stripe clutches at Francesca’s, I immediately jumped online to see what other colors it came in.  I love the size of this bag because it will hold my wallet, phone and extras comfortably.

I recently went to a summer favorite things party and brought the multi-color one and it was a big hit!  Everyone loved it!  I picked up the white stripe for myself and can’t wait to use it all summer long!  It is also a great teacher gift or Mother’s Day gift!

NUDE WEDGES

When spring hits I don’t know about you, but I am ready to ditch my closed toe shoes and throw on some sort of sandal.  An open toe nude wedge is my go to shoe when I want to be a little dressier than flats.  I have tried different brands and styles, and always keep coming back to these Steve Madden wedges.  I have the cognac color from two seasons ago and they are still going strong.  When I saw the new heel design and the nude color, I had to snag them.  The price point is also good.  Did I mention these shoes are actually comfortable!  They aren’t too high if you know what I mean and so comfy for walking around in.  For reference, they do run TTS and come in black, taupe and olive green.

DENIM JACKET

Another staple item for not only spring, but summer too is a good denim jacket.  They last forever and go with almost anything.  I used mine all the time when I was teaching or I bring it into church or a restaurant since I am always chilly.  This denim jacket, I scooped up when LOFT was running a 40% off sale, but any denim jacket will do.  There are so many good ones at different price points and colors to meet your liking.

STATEMENT EARRINGS

Lastly, statement earrings are a fun way to dress up an outfit without doing a lot.  I don’t like to invest a lot on a trendy pair of earrings, so finding this brand at Target has been a lifesaver for me.  They off so many different earrings to choose from.

This pair is actually sold out online in this color, but still available in blush.  If you are looking to try a fun pair of earrings, checkout all my favorite picks below.
